What is a domain name?
A domain name is a simple and readable name given to an internet address so that people can find it. Prior to domain names, you would have to reference the IP address of any service to access it. An IP address is like a phone number as they are also just a series of digits. They look something like 192.168.1.100. With a domain name, you don’t need to remember the number, you only need to remember the name (like swtechsolutions.ca) which is much easier.
What is a website?
I am sure you all know what a website is. You are on one right now. Facebook, Twitter (X), NovaScotia.ca are all examples of website. Most of what people refer to as the Internet are actually websites that exist on the Internet.
Why are these important for my business?
A properly designed and accessible website is your silent partner. Your website can sell and promote for you while your asleep, on vacation, in the office, on the phone, etc. It is always working for you promoting your products or services even when you aren’t.
These days it is pretty cheap to buy your own domain name. You can usually get one for between $15 – $25 (depending on the extension) so there’s no reason to not have one. A domain name gives you the ability to create professional looking email addresses with your business name in it. This levels up your professional look. An email address like contactme@isellstuffandjunk.com looks much better online and in print (business cards, flyers, etc.) than stuffandjunk69@hotmail.com does.
What can be done about this?
You can always go to a site like godaddy, register a domain, build and set up a website, and configure your email all by yourself. If you are technically minded this can most certainly be done. However, often times your time is better spent running your business and making sales. If the latter is the case, let us here at Southwest Tech Solutions help you out. You can partner with us and be as involved in the process as you wish.
