One of the cool things about being both a computer nerd and a radio nerd is getting to mesh the two together.

I’m currently working on a small project that uses a Radio over IP gateway to interface a VHF radio (or radios) with a computer. This is done over a local network or the Internet so the radio doesn’t need to be near the computer.

This allows the radio operator to control the radio via the PC. The software has all sorts of neat features such as recording and play back of calls, GPS mapping, contact lists, pre-recorded messages for transmission, and much more.

This kind of tech is great for fleet management and communications, dispatching of emergency or business services, remote worksite communications etc.

It’s some pretty cool stuff. I am a member of the Yarmouth Amateur Radio Club and currently hold the callsign VE1XT. I am also an ISED accredited examiner for the Amateur Radio Service in Canada.

If you are interested in Amateur (ham) Radio feel free to contact me.
